Artist-In-Residence, July-Dec 19: Ai Kumehara (JAP)
Japanese artist Ai Kumehara is artist-in-residence at Hollufgård in the second half of 2019.
Ai Kumehara will spend the time exploring nature in the Sculpture Park and shaping the impressions into a work. Her paintings are based on the traditional Japanese folding screens (byobu), which were originally furniture designed to shield a person from weather and gazes. Later, the screens increasingly became large decorative surfaces filled with genre paintings or floral and bird motifs. As such, the Japanese fold screens are both works of art that can be enjoyed and an integral, practical part of people’s daily lives. The work Ai Kumehara creates at Hollufgård is to reflect on coexistence with nature, and what coexistence means in Japanese and Danish thinking. Ai Kumehara graduated from Tama Art University and has exhibited in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Kyoto, Shanghai and Singapore.
